Here we have a new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, a tall order after Ang Lee’s 1995 version, arguably one of the best ever traditional book-to-screen adaptations of a Jane Austen novel. We shall see! We are introduced to the three Dashwood sisters and their mother, who find themselves faced with financial ruin when the father dies. Stripped of their prior social standing, the women relocate to a modest Devonshire cottage provided by a distant relative. The contrast referred to in the title is between the different temperaments of the two elder sisters: Elinor (rational) and Marianne (passionate).
