Durante una gita in barca su un lago irlandese, John Haloran muore improvvisamente per un attacco cardiaco. Sua moglie Louise, sapendo che verrà esclusa dal ricco testamento della suocera (Lady Haloran) in caso di morte del marito, decide di nasconderne il cadavere nel lago. Per coprire la scomparsa, la donna falsifica una lettera sostenendo che John sia dovuto partire d’urgenza per New York per affari. Louise si reca poi al castello di famiglia degli Haloran in Irlanda, dove i parenti si riuniscono ogni anno per una macabra commemorazione in ricordo della piccola Kathleen, la sorella minore annegata anni prima in circostanze misteriose. Nel tentativo di ingraziarsi Lady Haloran e garantirsi la propria quota di eredità, Louise pianifica una finta seduta spiritica facendosi passare per la voce della bambina morta. Tuttavia, strani fenomeni e vere e proprie apparizioni macabre iniziano a sconvolgere il castello, fino all’entrata in scena di uno spietato assassino misterioso armato d’ascia che inizia a massacrare gli abitanti della tenuta uno a uno.

During a boat trip on an Irish lake, John Haloran dies suddenly of a heart attack. His wife Louise, knowing she will be excluded from her mother-in-law’s (Lady Haloran) wealthy will if her husband dies, decides to hide his body in the lake. To cover up the disappearance, she forged a letter claiming that John had to leave urgently for New York on business.
Louise then travels to the Haloran family castle in Ireland, where relatives gather every year for a macabre commemoration in memory of little Kathleen, the younger sister who drowned years earlier under mysterious circumstances. In an attempt to ingratiate herself with Lady Haloran and secure her share of the inheritance, Louise plans a fake séance, pretending to be the voice of the dead child. However, strange phenomena and eerie apparitions begin to haunt the castle, culminating in the appearance of a ruthless, mysterious axe-wielding killer who begins slaughtering the estate’s inhabitants one by one.
