Set in Arkansas during the 1930s Great Depression era, the film follows young Bertha Thompson who, left orphaned after a plane crash that kills her father, wanders the country hopping freight trains (boxcars).
Bertha joins ‘Big’ Bill Shelly, an idealistic unionizer and political activist fighting against the powerful Reader Railroad company. Together with a gambler (Rake Brown) and a Black worker (Rachelin), the group turns into a band of outlaws dedicated to robbing the railway to fund the workers’ cause. The escalating spiral of violence, pursued by law enforcement and vigilantes hired by the railroad tycoons, leads toward a tragic and dramatic conclusion.
