Novembre 1932. Nella magnifica tenuta di campagna di Gosford Park, Sir William McCordie e la moglie, lady Sylvia, organizzano una festa che si protrarrà per l’intero week-end. Il gruppo di invitati é piuttosto eterogeneo: c’é Constance, contessa di Trentham, zia di lady Sylvia; c’é Anthony Meredith, ex ufficiale eroe della guerra mondiale; c’é Ivor Novello, attore famosissimo delle matinée britanniche; c’é Morris Weissman, americano, produttore dei film della serie Charlie Chan, di cui sta mettendo in cantiere una nuova avventura. Ci sono poi Isobel, figlia di lady Sylvia; e Louisa, la sorella minore con il marito Raymond. Tutti gli ospiti arrivano nella residenza in compagnia della servitù. A questi ultimi i domestici di casa assegnano i posti, e ricordano che i loro nomi in quella occasione sono quelli dei rispettivi padroni: ad organizzare sono Jennings, capo maggiordomo; mrs.Wilson, la governante; mrs. Croft, la cuoca; Elsie, la capocameriera. Dopo la prima notte (in cui Henry, valletto un po’ strano di Morris si è spinto a portare il latte in camera di lady Sylvia), il mattino seguente il gruppo parte per la caccia. Verso la fine, sir Williams viene sfiorato da un misterioso proiettile sparato non si sa da chi. La sera a cena, Elsie mentre serve prende la parola in difesa di sir Williams, di cui é l’amante, e subito scappa, consapevole che per lei non c’è più posto in villa. La signora Wilson porta un caffè in biblioteca a sir William, lui lo rifiuta, beve un liquore. Poco dopo, non vedendolo, Isobel va a cercarlo e lo trova morto. Arriva l’ispettore Thompson e comincia ad indagare. Intanto si scopre che il quello arrivato con Morris non è un valletto ma un attore, convocato per imparare da vicino certe usanze britanniche. Mentre l’ispettore interroga, Mary, la cameriera di Constance, riesce a sapere che sir William era il padre di Robert, valletto di Raymond. William, quando aveva le fabbriche, ne approfittava per avere rapporti con quasi tutte le operaie, i cui figli poi prendevano strade diverse, in vari orfanotrofi. La signora Wilson è sorella della signora Croft, e la mamma di Robert. Ora il cerchio si è chiuso. L’ispettore va via senza aver individuato il colpevole. Mary sale sulla carrozza della sua padrona lady Constance. Gosford Park resta di nuovo in solitudine.

November 1932. At the magnificent countryside estate of Gosford Park, Sir William McCordle and his wife, Lady Sylvia, are hosting a weekend-long party. The group of guests is quite varied: there’s Constance, Countess of Trentham, Lady Sylvia’s aunt; Anthony Meredith, a former World War hero; Ivor Novello, a famous matinée idol; and Morris Weissman, an American film producer known for the Charlie Chan series, who is working on a new installment. Also present are Isobel, Lady Sylvia’s daughter; and Louisa, her younger sister, with her husband Raymond.

All guests arrive accompanied by their servants. The household staff assigns places for the visiting servants and reminds them that, during the stay, they will go by the names of their employers. The household is run by Jennings, the head butler; Mrs. Wilson, the housekeeper; Mrs. Croft, the cook; and Elsie, the head housemaid.

After the first night—during which Henry, Morris’s slightly odd valet, delivers milk to Lady Sylvia’s room—the group heads out for a day of hunting. Toward the end of the hunt, Sir William is nearly hit by a mysterious bullet fired by an unknown shooter.

That evening at dinner, Elsie, while serving, speaks out in defense of Sir William, with whom she is having an affair. She immediately flees, aware that she no longer has a place in the house. Mrs. Wilson brings coffee to Sir William in the library, but he refuses and instead drinks a liquor. Shortly after, when he is not seen, Isobel goes looking for him and finds him dead.

Inspector Thompson arrives to investigate. Meanwhile, it’s revealed that the man who came with Morris is not actually a valet, but an actor hired to study British customs firsthand for a film.

As the inspector continues his questioning, Mary, Countess Constance’s maid, learns that Sir William was the father of Robert, Raymond’s valet. When he owned factories, Sir William exploited female workers, fathering many children later sent to different orphanages. Mrs. Wilson is the sister of Mrs. Croft—and the mother of Robert.

Now the circle is complete. The inspector leaves without identifying the killer. Mary climbs into the carriage with her mistress, Lady Constance. Gosford Park is left alone once more.
